The organs of speech are divided into active (movable) and passive (fixed). The organs of speech which can move and take an active part in the articulation of speech sounds are called active organs of speech. These are the lower and the upper lips, the tongue, the soft palate with the uvula and the vocal cords. The organs of speech with which an active organ forms an obstruction and which thus serve as points of articulation, are called passive organs of speech. These are the teeth, the alveolar ridge and the hard palate. The movementsof the tongue, the lips and the lowerjaw can change the volume and shape of the empty space in the mouth cavity. Besides, the movements of the lips can change the shape and size of the mouth opening. The volume of the empty space in the pharynx can be changed by contracting the back wall of the pharynx and by moving the root of the tongue towards the back wall of the pharynx. These empty spaces function as resonators. Thus the mouth cavity, the pharynx and the nasal cavity serve as resonance chambers. TABLE OF CONTENTS.
